HOW DO YOU GET HYPERBARIC OXYGEN THERAPY?

All referrals are on a self help basis and made through your medical practitioner or consultant here on the Isle of Man. This referral is then put to our team of professionals for consideration dependent on your medical condition, injury or illness and the benefits it will be to yourself. Availability is of course subject to what space is available per session at the time of commencement of treatments.

HOW OFTEN IS HYPERBARIC OXYGEN ADMINISTERED?

A variety of factors determine the treatment protocol. Acute conditions may require a treatment of a period of ten days or less, while chronic conditions may require therapy over a few months. Although treatment schedules will vary, most treatments will be administered during one to two hour sessions once or twice a day several times a week.

WHAT DOES IT FEEL LIKE?

The first stage of treatment is compression, in which the pressure inside the system is gradually increased. The temperature increase a little but is later adjusted to a comfortable level. You will feel fullness in your ear which is similar to driving over the mountain road, or in an aircraft. The outer ear and middle ear equalise themselves naturally and during the pressurisation this continues to happen. Instructions are provided at the patient briefing as to help clear the pressure and relieve any temporary discomfort that may occur. When the treatment is completed, normal pressure is restored slowly.

When you are instructed you clean and place the oxygen mask on your face covering your nose and mouth and breathe normally. If at any time you wish to take the mask off you can do so.

Throughout your treatment our staff our watching you on the CCTV and also listening of the Audio system should you wish to speak to them.

The chamber itself does not go anywhere, (I.e. into the river), nobody gets wet and it is amazing how large the chamber is inside. (More leg and head room than being in an aircraft).

WHEN DO YOU START?

When are team has reviewed the redacted medical history along with your condition along with all necessary documentation, you’ll be invited to attend a patient briefing where everything will be explained with regards, what to wear, what to bring, and what to do along with what you will experience. You can ask questions and will be shown everything required to attend a session of hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
